History

캔(CAN)은 2008년 예술가들의 창작활동을 지원해야 하는 필요성을 느낀 세 명의 설립자(김성희, 김영주, 장문경)들에 의하여 시작되었으며 현대미술을 중심으로 예술가의 발굴과 전시, 창작공간지원 해외기관 및 예술가와의 교류, 네트워크 구축 등을 지원하고 있습니다.

CAN was founded in 2008 by three founders who recognized the need to support artistic creation. With a focus on contemporary art, CAN nurtures emerging artists through exhibitions, creative space support, international collaborations, and network-building.

전시

캔에서는 2008년 6월 중국 베이징 798지구에 〈스페이스 캔-베이징〉을 설립하여 한국 현대미술작가들의 전시를 지원하였으며, 동년 12월에는 서울시 성북구에 전시공간 〈스페이스 캔〉을 설립, 작가들의 전시활동을 적극적으로 지원하고 있습니다. 또한 2010년에는 성북동 소재의 오래된 가옥 두 채를 전시공간으로 개조, 〈오래된 집〉이라 명명하여 장소특정적 전시를 선보이고 있습니다.

2024년 한남동에 새로운 공간 MO BY CAN을 개관했습니다. ‘모씨’와 같이 불특정인을 지칭하는 관형사 ‘모’의 익명성에서 영감을 받은 MO BY CAN에서 작가들은 작품의 가치와 예술성으로 인정받고, 관람객들은 자유로운 시선으로 작가와 작품이 주는 새로운 가능성을 모색합니다.

Exhibitions

In June 2008, CAN launched Space CAN-Beijing in Beijing’s 798 Art District, providing a platform for Korean contemporary artists. Later that year, Space CAN opened in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul, further supporting artists’ exhibition activities. In 2010, CAN transformed two traditional houses in Seongbuk-dong into a site-specific exhibition venue, The Old House.

In 2024, CAN introduced MO BY CAN in Hannam-dong, inspired by the anonymity of the Korean prefix “Mo” (meaning “someone”). This space allows artists to be recognized for their artistic value while inviting audiences to explore new possibilities through an open perspective.

아티스트 레지던시 프로그램

캔은 창작의 ‘결과’를 선보이는 전시활동 외 전시를 만들기까지의 ‘과정’에 주목하고 있기도 합니다. <스페이스 캔-베이징>에서는 PSB(Project Space in Beijing)이라는 창작지원활동을 펼치며 아시아 미술의 중심인 중국의 화단에 국내 작가들이 진출할 수 있는 교두보를 마련하였고, 2011년에는 또 다른 PSB(Project Space in Berlin)을 설립하여 세계미술의 새로운 중심으로 떠오르고 있는 독일 베를린으로의 진출을 도왔습니다. 2014년에는 PSB프로그램을 더욱 확대하고, 적극적인 현지 네트워크 활동을 구축하고자 베를린의 비영리 예술기관인 ZK/U(Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik)과 양해각서를 체결하여 작가들이 ZK/U에 입주할 수 있도록 지원하였습니다. 아울러 2015년에는 국내 레지던시 프로그램으로 <명륜동 작업실>을 개관하여 작가들이 공간에 대한 걱정 없이 창작 활동에만 전념할 수 있도록 지원하고 있습니다.

Artist Residency Programs

Beyond exhibitions, CAN emphasizes the creative process. Project Space in Beijing (PSB), launched in 2008, provided Korean artists a gateway into China’s art scene. In 2011, CAN expanded to Berlin with Project Space in Berlin (PSB), supporting artists in this global art hub. Furthering its commitment, CAN partnered with ZK/U (Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik) in 2014, offering artist residencies in Berlin. Domestically, CAN opened Myeongnyun-dong Studios in 2015, providing local artists a dedicated creative space.

아트버스 캔버스

2009년부터 시작된 아트버스는 문화 나눔 희망 지역 참가자들을 대상으로 예술가와 함께하는 미술체험 프로그램을 제공하고 있습니다. 2024년까지 전국 250곳 335,287km를 달리며 156명의 아티스트와 12,113명의 참가자가 함께하였습니다. 팬데믹 이후 탈북청소년학교 및 복지관 등에 작가, 에듀케이터, 강사가 찾아가는 아트버스 캔버스 프로그램을 진행하고 있습니다.

ARTBUS CANbus

Since 2009, the ARTBUS CANbus program has delivered hands-on art experiences to underprivileged communities. By 2024, the initiative has traveled 335,287 km to 250 locations, engaging 156 artists and 12,113 participants. Post-pandemic, the program expanded to serve North Korean defector schools and community welfare centers, bringing art directly to those in need.

캔은 이렇듯 시각예술을 중심으로 전시활동지원, 창작지원, 교육을 통한 사회공헌 사업 등을 통하여 더 많은 사람들과 함께하며 예술가와 대중이 서로에게 필요한 부분을 채울 수 있는 상생과 공존의 방식을 찾는 지역기반의 아트센터로 자리매김하고 있습니다.

Our Vision

Through exhibitions, creative support, and educational outreach, CAN continues to build a sustainable art ecosystem. By bridging the gap between artists and the public, CAN fosters coexistence and mutual growth, establishing itself as a community-driven art center.
